Reflection Time, People!
Okay. What I want you guys to do at some point before Tuesday's class: think about your first two weeks in this course and answer the question, "Why are we doing what we're doing?" If you have no idea why we're talking about discourse communities or purpose, audience and situation or ethos, pathos, logos or genres and conventions of genres, then say so and say why. But if you have any insight--even pretend insight, manufactured simply for this blogging occasion--then I want to hear it. Is it important to think and write about the concepts presented so far? And if so, what can be gained by doing so? Go!

I believe that we are doing what we are doing to start to look at things analytically. Not only to decipher language and the ways others use it, but to use it ourselves to properly convey what we want to say.
ReplyDeleteI think that it's important to analyze the texts that we are reading to determine the true reasoning behind the words simply listed on the ads, or signs, or whatever it is we are reading. It is important that we understand the purpose of our writing and that we understand our audience so that everything we do works effectively in the way that we want it to.
ReplyDeleteI believe we are starting off by analyzing other works so that we can see what it is like to analyze things rhetorically. I feel that this is just a prep into the types of writing we are going to be doing over the next couple months. By seeing what other people do and how they are effective we can apply it to our writing.
ReplyDeleteI believe that we are analyzing things rhetorically and doing discourse communities in order to look deeper into writing. It forces you to disect writing which uncovers deeper meaning. Also, you see writing from a different perspective. This allows you to be able to see your audience's point of view.
ReplyDeleteBy analyzing writing rhetorically it forces us to see the importance in writing and to construct writings for the correct audience. All types of writings are different and they are read differently and they should be written in that way as well. I think this is one of te foundations to writing and connecting to an audience through paper.
ReplyDeleteI think, we are focusing on rhetorical writing because it would be very helpful later in writing any kind of literature. It could be a college paper, a newspaper editorial, or an apology letter to a professor; all of them need persuasion in it and writing rhetorically is the way to do it.
ReplyDeleteI think that we are analyzing rhetorical writings so we can understand what the author is trying to convey it's audience. It's important for us to focus on this type of writing so we can improve our writing skills.
ReplyDeleteWe are taking a Rhetorical approach to our writing which focuses on audience, purpose and situation. These help us to be better writers because it gives us a purpose of writing and who we are trying to focus on. Previous assignments like the cultural artifacts helped us to better understand how the rhetorical approach is taken in these situations. There is a specific reason that things are what they are. For example, the advertisements targeted certain audience and they had a specific purpose. Applying the Rhetorical approach allows us to be more aware of types of genres that are out there.
ReplyDeleteWe are learning about this in class because it is important to understand exactly why something is written and exactly what the author intended. If we understand the logic behind someones writing, then we can discover further meaning. It will also allow us to improve our writing skills.
ReplyDeleteWe are doing what English is all about deciphering the meaning behind what the author is talking about. Which we are doing with Rhetorical approach. So we can understand where the author is coming from to understand more of the text we are reading.
ReplyDeleteIt seems to me that we are analyzing rhetorically in order to understand where the author is coming from and for whom he is writing. Analyzing rhetorically also allows us to understand how to write rhetorically.
ReplyDeleteWe are learning about discourse communities; purpose, audience and situation; and ethos, pathos, and logos to not only come to better analyze the various forms of literature, but to also learn how to apply these things that we have learned so far to real life. We want to better be able to understand why an article in a newspaper is written in a certain form and how it effects us, or the packaging of a product, or why someone is trying to persuade us to do something; in effect we also want to be able to persuade someone else.
ReplyDeleteWe have been going over this material in order to teach us the basics of becoming great writers. We went over the discourse communities to really think about the groups we associate with, how we communicate, and the different behaviors in each. We went over the ethos, pathos, logos, and genres to get us in the habit of analyzing writing around us.
ReplyDeleteI think we have been learning about about discourse communities because it will help us understand some of the things we will read better. It has taught us that every writter has a purpose and a speific audience when he writes something. Also, I think it will help us be better writters because know we know different ways to persuade people and also what type of language to use according to the audience.
ReplyDeleteWe have been going over the ground work of what it takes to be a good writer. If you know exactly where you are coming from, who you are writing for, and how you want to convey what you are writing, it is much easier to write a solid, focused paper.
