Courtney is a freshman at Virginia Tech hoping to become an aerospace engineer. She has wanted to attend Tech for a very long time. She fell in love with the atmosphere and that it was a good location from home. One reason that she wants to become an engineer is because her father is an engineer. Her dad also attended Tech which is a reason why she chose to be a student at Tech. Her dad, mom, grandmother, and great-grandmother are big influences in her life. She looks up to them and they have helped her become the person that she is today. They taught her the values that she follows today and have build her character.
Both Courtney’s grandmother and great-grandmother are very strong women. They have gone through many tough obstacles in life and persevered. They have been good role models for Courtney and she want to be as strong as them. Her mother is her best friend and number one fan and has always been there for her. They have shown Courtney to be strong, hardworking woman. Courtney influences have made her an honest, responsible, and supportive person because she is surrounded by a family that expresses those values all the time. When asked what defines Courtney, her mother said, “defined by her family values and knowing right from wrong.”
Courtney values hard work and dedication. She knows when it’s the appropriate time to be serious and when it’s ok to have fun. She also values honesty. People that are two-face are one of her pet peeves. All of her relationships are build off of trust so when someone lies, she loses all respect for them. She thinks that drama between people is stupid, and if everyone would be honest and be themselves then everyone would have a good time in life.
Her and her family are very close, relationship wise, and where they live. They all live within 15 minutes of each other in Williamsburg, VA so they can be there for each other whenever anyone needs them. Since they live so close to each other they are also very nosey. “They are nosey, southern, sarcastic people,” Courtney says while explaining what her family is like. One night her whole family surprised her and skyped her. Anytime her whole family gets together is a great memory for Courtney because they always have fun. “I wasn’t expecting my whole family to be there, just my mom and dad,” Courtney explained, “but I loved seeing them all at once.” The family asked millions of questions to know how she was doing at Tech. The fact that the whole family unexpectedly showed up to Skype Courtney shows that they really do care for her.
Family is such a huge part of Courtney’s life that she can’t go one day without talking to them. “Just hearing their voice puts a smile on my face,” she said when she explains why she enjoys talking to them. Talking to her mom is one way that she relieves stress whenever her life gets pretty hectic. She talks to her friends to help her unwind too. Courtney’s friends are just as important as her family.
Her friends have also helped her become the person she is today because they have helped her get through tough times. Since her and all of her friends are in college, it’s hard for them to talk every day. Courtney can only go a few days without talking to her friends. They love to just hang out and have fun. Girl’s nights, concerts, and going to the beach are some great memories that she has with her friends. Even just a simple run and workout with a friend are good times for her. Having a good time and knowing that they are always there to support her is comforting to Courtney.
Courtney’s friends and family are a huge part of her life because they are always there to support her. Having a support group has helped Courtney become a hard worker and try her best. She worked hard to be a starter and have her field hockey team go to states two years in a row, and her friends and family were there to push her. Her family and friends are proud of both her academic and athletic successes. Now her support group helps her through the stresses of being an involved engineer at Virginia Tech.
Courtney may seem like a quiet introverted engineer, but that is far from the truth. When asked what others think she thought others think about Courtney her mother responded, “Outsiders often view Courtney as quiet, reserved but definitely family oriented.” People may view that at first but she is outgoing and involved in many clubs. Courtney is currently involved in three clubs/societies. She is in Society of Women Engineer, SEC, and Hypatia. Hypatia is a society that takes up a lot of time. It’s tough to handle classes, the busy work that needs to be done for Hypatia, and to enjoy being a kid in college. “I know she will do well though because she is organized, focused, and goal-oriented,” her mother said when commenting on the work load.
As some freshman still struggle to adjust to college and do well academically, Courtney doesn’t worry at all. She has balanced a social life and doing well in school, while still having fun and staying in touch with family back home. It’s always easier to do stuff when you have a support group or just know that someone will be there behind you no matter what. She has her friends that she has made here, friends from home, and her nurturing family to always be there for her. With a support group Courtney will be a great friend and engineer at Virginia Tech.
