He might look intimidating at first, standing at around 6 feet 200 pounds. Particularly with his full grown beard, and kind of curly dark brown hair, he looks like he could intimidate anyone. You may even think that he was a bully or someone that used his physical traits to his advantage, but what you don’t know is that Kyle Campbell is just a regular guy. He was born and raised in Northern Virginia and has lived in the same place his entire life. He has 3 siblings and 2 pets, loves pizza and hanging around with friends. He likes to have fun and is always up for a good time. The thing that separates him from most students is that he plays lacrosse. To some people including me that is not that special, specially where I come from there’s the group of guys and girls that play lacrosse and then there’s everyone else. In some parts of the country like Long Island New York, lacrosse isn’t just a sport but a religion. But in other parts of the country, for example Northern Virginia, lacrosse is just seen as another sport and isn’t very important and that is what makes Kyle a very special person.
Kyle fits into the majority of males at Virginia Tech, he is a white male studying engineering. But what seems to set him apart from the pack is that not only did he play lacrosse, but it was his favorite sport too. Another thing is that he plays defense, and in lacrosse you need to have certain physical traits to be a good defender. This is why if you thought he might have used his physical traits to his advantage you would have not been entirely wrong. He plays defense, which requires the player to be quick on his feet but also have the ability to be physically dominate. This is how being around 6 feet comes into play, because when an attack man tries to go to goal, he is able to use his size to push the attack man out of the way and protect his goal.
It all started in 10th grade; he was going to try out for his high school’s JV lacrosse team because his friends were trying out to and pushed him to do it. He didn’t expect much out of it or even expected to make the team because he had never played lacrosse or even picked up a stick. What he didn’t know is that not only would he make the team, but that he would discover his favorite sport. His first time picking up the sticks would be the first day of tryouts. He knew that he had no stick skills but still had fun with it and used some of his attributes to make him a good candidate to join the team. He is built around 6 feet and that is the perfect size to play defense in lacrosse because it’s necessary to be able to push out attackers from goal and also to lay out hits. Also, he had great athletic ability, so this impressed the coaches enough for them to overlook his poor stick skills. Not only did he make the team his first season playing lacrosse, but he also started all the games in the season. At the end of the season, his hard work and effort were rewarded by being called up to the varsity team during playoffs. Even though they didn’t win states, it was still a successful season for a player that had not picked up a lacrosse stick before the start of the season and didn’t expect to make the team. Kyle had his sights set on his junior year because he would be on the varsity squad and he would have a year of experience under his belt.
Kyle and his lacrosse team were hit with bad news when they found out that they were going to split up the high school. This meant that the lacrosse team would suffer with its team being split in half. That wasn’t the worst part though; he then found out that they were not going to keep the senior class together. This meant that the new high which he would be attending would only have 5 seniors on the lacrosse team because majority of the seniors had been sent to the other high school. The year would get worst, mid way through the season he sustained a knee injury. Even though it wasn’t a serious injury, it changed his playing style and the effectiveness he had in the game because he was now slowed down and had lost some of his athletic ability. His junior season would be a complete disappointment in his eyes, with the expectation from the end of the last season, this season had been a complete failure.
Even though his junior season was a disappointment, his senior season would get worse before it began. The head coach would be fired and the JV coach would be the new head coach. The season would be a greater disappointment because not only did they have a new coach, but also the majority of the team was still underclassmen which meant they were inexperienced and in the end would lead to a lot of losses. Although they didn’t win many games, Kyle still enjoyed playing his new found passion and had fun every step of the way. The season would end in an embarrassing loss to the high school that had been formed from his old high school, just to be ironic. He played on a travel team during the summer but was never able to reach the potential he could have. He is disappointed now looking back and seeing what could have been if his former high school hadn’t split up and the head coach hadn’t been fired.
